Standard Operating Procedure #5

Battalion Promotion Policy

1. Generally, a formal promotion and awards ceremony is held after the end of 1st semester, mid February, and again near the end of the school year, late May or early June. These are the formal ceremonies where recognition is given via promotion in grade, individual and unit awards. At this time we also move cadets in and out of positions for leadership experience and training. However, the Instructor team will throughout the school year promote and move assignments as necessary.

2. Participation at the promotion and awards ceremonies is voluntary but highly encouraged. Family and friends are encouraged to attend as well.

3. Promotion schedule for cadets in good standing:

- Generally LET 1?s will accomplish promotion to Cadet Corporal by the end of their first year. This is dependent on being a ?Cadet in Good Standing? and academic grade(s).

- LET 2?s will see themselves promoted through the grades of a senior cadet NCO (Cadet Sergeant First Class) or higher depending on their own abilities and support of the Corps of Cadets. They also must have accumulated 12 hours of Community Service.

- LET 3?s will find themselves entering the very highest levels of a Cadet NCO (Cadet Master Sergeant or Cadet Sergeant Major), or being promoted into the Cadet Officer Corps (Cadet Lieutenant or Cadet Captain). They also must have accumulated 18 hours of Community Service.

- Community Service is a critical part of being a good citizen and being in the Corps of Cadets. Community Service must be approved by the SAI/AI before it will be accepted and recorded as credit towards promotion and awards.

- As cadets continue to exemplify themselves through hard work, personal responsibility and a sound dedication to the Corps of Cadets they will compete and progress to the highest grades within the Corps of Cadets. These are positions such as Battalion Commander, Battalion Executive Officer, Battalion Staff Officer, Battalion Command Sergeant Major and Company Commanders.

- All cadets who wish to enter the Officer Corps of Cadets must show continued personal responsibility for academics, corps values, and personal appearance. They must have completed 8 hours of community service before their ?Oath of Acceptance? occurs. The soundness of their ability will be continually monitored by the Army Instructor Team for worthiness to become a JROTC Officer.

4. Standards for reduction in grade (brief). When a cadet?s personal actions lead to a disciplinary situation (in the Corps of Cadets, school or community) it is has a far-reaching affect on all their peers and the Corps of Cadets in total. Such actions carry serious consequences.

- One of these consequences is reduction in grade. Normally through an Honor Council recommendation a cadet may be reduced from his/her present grade to a grade determined appropriate by the Instructor Team.

- As an extreme, a cadet may be dropped from the Corps of Cadets for violation of the Cadet Creed in a ?most? serious nature.

- A cadet that is dropped from the Corps of Cadets may apply through a personal interview with the Instructor Team for re-admission the next school year.

- A cadet that fails JROTC for the school year will be demoted to Cadet Private and may only return to the Corps of Cadets after a personal interview with the Instructor Team and will be required to repeat the failed LET level or a level recommended by the Instructor Team.

- A cadet who fails a marking period of LET, but not the entire year, will be an Honor Council issue for ?possible? reduction in grade.

- Any Cadet in a Leader position who fails a marking period will be considered by the Honor Council for removal from their leader position and reduction in grade.

I am an Army Junior ROTC Cadet. I will always conduct myself to bring credit to my family, country, school and Corps of Cadets. I am loyal and patriotic. I am the future of the United States of America. I do not lie, cheat or steal and will always be accountable for my actions and deeds. I will always practice good citizenship and patriotism. I will work hard to improve my mind and strengthen my body. I will seek the mantle of leadership and stand prepared to uphold the Constitution and the American way of life. Grant me the strength to live by this creed.
