What is JROTC?
The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) is a program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools across the United States that "instills in students in United States secondary educational institutions the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.". The program was originally created as part of the 1916 National Defense Act and was later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act. Current statutory authority for the existence of the JROTC is contained in Title 10, United States Code, Section 2031.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does it cost anything to join JROTC? Do cadets need to pay for their uniforms?A: No. The program is funded by the Department of Defense. Some extracurricular activities require the cadet to pay, such as field trips, but the course itself is free. If a uniform is lost or destroyed the cadet will have to pay for a replacement.
Q: Is a JROTC cadet obligated to any kind of military service after graduation from school?
A: No. A lot of cadets never pursue a career in the armed services, but those that do go into the military will enter at the rank of E3.
Q: If a person is a member of an Army JROTC program, can they still join a different military branch?
A: Yes. A cadet may still join the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, or the Marine Corps if they so choose as cadets are not obligated to military service of any kind. The AJROTC program focuses mainly on the Army and its role in the world, but there are many opportunities to learn about any of the other branches of the military and what they have to offer.
